Following the release of his previous album Ommadawn (1975), Oldfield moved into a new home in Bisley, Gloucestershire, where he set up a new recording studio. He started on a follow-up in 1977 which took form as a double album with one, side-long track on each side of the LP record. Oldfield wished to use real incantations in the music, but ended up using folklore as a loose running theme, such as Dianna the Huntress. Though primarily instrumental, lyrical sections are adapted from works by poems Longfellow and Ben Jonson. Oldfield completed the self-awareness seminar Exegesis while recording Incantations.

Hergest Ridge is the second studio album by English musician and songwriter Mike Oldfield, released on 28 August 1974 by Virgin Records. The unexpected commercial and critical success of his debut album Tubular Bells (1973) affected Oldfield, who decided against touring and avoided the press with his newfound fame. Instead, he retreated to Hergest Ridge on the England–Wales border and wrote the follow-up, which he recorded in 1974 at The Manor in Oxfordshire, with Tom Newman returning as co-producer. Similar to Oldfield's first, the album is a single composition split into two parts covering different moods and musical styles.

Last month Universal Music’s enormous Moody Blues Timeless Flight 17-disc super deluxe box set was released, and like a few recent box sets (Wings Over America, Smashing Pumpkin’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) it retails at well over £100 (nearer to £200 on amazon UK at the time of writing).
Unlike those sets, Timeless Flight celebrates an entire career, and Mark Powell (who researched, compiled and produced this set) has done an incredible job in terms of the audio within (14 discs of it, including three DVDs with six albums in 5.1 surround sound), the video content (a further three DVDs) and the supporting content of which the 124-page hardback book is the outstanding element.
The book is one of the very best we’ve seen in a super deluxe music set, with a seemingly endless amount of archive photography, sitting alongside words which tell the story of the band.

The Good Earth is the fifth studio album released by Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1974. Its opening song is a cover of "Give Me the Good Earth", written by Gary Wright and released on his 1971 solo album Footprint, while tracks 2 and 3 were originally by Australian progressive rock band Spectrum.
Early owners of each copy of The Good Earth were entitled to rights over 1 square foot of the earth situated at Llanerchyrfa in the County of Brecon, in Wales. The inner sleeve included a coupon that had to be sent for registration. This was part of the promotion activities linked to the album that had ecological inspirations. There was no swindle and thousands of fans were registered. Registration could be done on or before 31 December 1975.
