Поводом для появления группы «The Quireboys» стало знакомство вокалиста Джонатана Грэя по прозвищу Спайк и гитариста Гая Бэйли, произошедшее в конце 1985 года. Третьим членом команды оказался бас-гитарист Крис Джонстон, который вскоре уступил место Найджелу Моггу. Чуть позже Крис вернулся в группу, но поскольку басуха уже была занята, ему пришлось осваивать клавишные. Изначально коллектив получил название «The Choirboys», однако из-за чересчур глэмового имиджа знакомые Спайка и Бэйли дразнили их «The Queerboys». Как ни странно, но прозвище это прижилось и получило официальный статус. Несмотря на свое дурацкое имя, «Queerboys» производили вполне востребованную музыку и запросто делали аншлаговые концерты в клубах типа «Marquee».
