New Light Through Old Windows is the first compilation album by British singer-songwriter Chris Rea, released in October 1988. The album consists primarily of re-recordings of songs from Rea's earlier albums, as well as the new track "Working on It", which peaked at No. 73 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and was Rea's only No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. "On the Beach" peaked at No. 9 on the US Adult Contemporary singles chart, and No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. The album reached number five on the UK Albums Chart, charted for over a year, and was certified 3× Platinum by BPI until 1992. It charted in the Top 10 in New Zealand, Austria and West Germany.

Альбом, записанный в августе 1982-го (подумать только, почти тридцать лет назад!), вышел в 83-м, и, по большому счету, не оправдал своего выпуска тем, что был «недостаточно трэшевым», ибо вышедшие в тот же год дебютники Slayer, Anthrax и Metallica демонстрировали более высокую скорость исполнения и большую озлобленность, что, возможно, и обеспечило им проход в «высшие эшелоны». Exciter же, на мой взгляд, представляют собой этакий heavy metal вроде Saxon с элементами speed metal, ну, может, чуть потяжелей и позлей, с таким же средним по качеству материалом, как и у англичан.

Думаю, что не ошибусь, если скажу, что те, кто любил шведскую формацию Falconer, любили их именно за удивительно гармоничное сочетание пауэра и фолка, помноженное на необычайную хитовость песен, которые, будучи прослушанными лишь раз, надолго врезались в память. Почему я говорю в прошедшем времени? Да потому, что на четвертом альбоме группы от «былой роскоши» осталось очень мало. Музыка Falconer стала более жесткой, акцент заметно сместился в сторону пауэра, оставив фолку не слишком завидную роль орнамента, в музыке появилось много таких нетипичных для них элементов, как женский бэк-вокал или даже гроулинг.

Бескомпромиссная, удивительная, жестокая, мрачная, лиричная, отчаянная пластинка, мелодии которой сделают честь любой альтернативной группе, а энергетика заставит забыть навсегда половину "брутальных" команд. Меланхолия "Epic", бузудержная агрессия "Surprise!You're Dead!", невероятное сочетание мелодичности и злобы в "Morning After", "Zombie Eaters", "War Pigs" (Саббатовский кавер) и "The Real Thing"… Вещи эти - абсолютные шедевры, в них совершенно все, от резких гитарных риффов, до беспредельного вокала Майка Паттона. Трэк, фактически и концептуально завершающий альбом, носит название "The Edge Of The World", и это песня о последней любви людей, разных по возрасту, но в ней нет никакой Лолитовской пошлости, только отчаяние в предчувствии падения в бездну, где кончается любовь, кончается жизнь, кончается мир под звуки расстроенного пианино…
