José James has announced the release date of his next album. The critically acclaimed vocalist will honor his “musical mother” Billie Holiday‘s 100th birthday with the March 31 release of his latest project, "Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music of Billie Holiday". Produced by Blue Note Records president Don Was, the album will feature pianist Jason Moran, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Eric Harland alongside James as they cover nine songs that were either written or popularized by the legendary blues songstress.

As well as songs from the band's debut album Are You Experienced, Monterey also includes covers of "Killing Floor" (Howlin' Wolf), "Like a Rolling Stone" (Bob Dylan), "Rock Me Baby" (B. B. King) and "Wild Thing" (Chip Taylor). The version of "Wild Thing" on the album is one of the most notable live performances ever, as, in an iconic moment in rock history, he sets his guitar alight after the song and then smashes it.

The whole story explores the inner struggle inside the multifaceted and engorging character that this mysterious 15th Century personality was, while also taking into account some of the metaphysical aspects that passed into literature, forming the whole basis of the vampire mythos.
