Submotion Orchestra - a band who sound exactly as their name suggests - reawaken the rotting corpse of ’90s coffee-table chillout, issuing a mild dubstep sedative and putting it straight back to sleep. If you’re somehow hankering after a trip-hop fix you’re better off checking out the last month’s Red Snapper comeback, which doesn’t sound half as dated. Or just go back to your Lamb albums, of which there is a new one out this very month - gotta be better than this dozy fare.

With such a large and mostly coherent discography, it’s frankly impressive that Sol Invictus anno 2014 are incorporating the sounds of bands that they helped inspire. Once Upon A Time could be a one-time experiment with Anderson’s electric guitars, or it might signify a new chapter in Wakeford’s career. It’s a fresh take on the crooning folk noir, and their best album since at least 2002’s Thrones. For readers unfamiliar with the work of Sol Invictus, Death In June, or Current 93, this is a soft introduction and a good gateway into the eclectic world of neofolk.

Arcadian is the 8th full-length album from Seattle-based electronic-music songwriter/producer Symbion Project aka Kasson Crooker. While previous releases have seen the moniker’s sound range from chaotic IDM to cinematic downtempo to classical synthesizer music, Aracadian sees the project nod to electronic-based, beat-driven song structures that draw circles around the world’s more melancholy realities.
