Дальнейший творческий путь Стива Хакетта хоть и не был усеян розами, но качество его музыки оставалось постоянным. Если не ошибаюсь, это первый полноформатник с участием великого и ужасного, нет, на самом деле, милого и доброго парнишки – Роба Трухильо. Спекулировать о том, как он изменил музыку ST своим появлением, трудно, имея на руках лишь этот, кхм, опус. К тому же технари были в ST и до него, и после него, и кроме него. Личность, однако импозантная, с интересным стилем игры – и есть где развернуться на этом альбоме. Признаюсь: кроме разудалого фанка и скоростного кроссовера я от ST ничего не ожидал... Тем более парадоксальна ситуация, что оба компонента тут присутствуют, но что-то странное случилось с психами.

Альбом, преимущественно со среднетемповыми песнями, сшит помпезными и выразительными балладами. Особо выделяются «Garden Of Pain», с шикарным припевом, который запоминается уже к концу песни; «Seven Faces (And Two Hearts)», великолепная баллада под акустическую гитару; «The King Of Winds» — чистейший пауэр с красивыми пассажами в конце, хором, выразительными клавишными и венчающим все это пронзительным голосом вокалиста; «I'll Never Forgive» — сложная многочастная композиция, в общем характеризующая собой альбом.

Диск посвящён войне во Вьетнаме, а если быть точным - ужасам и страданиям, которые сопровождали данную провальную американскую военную кампанию. Жесткий рев гитары, по-настоящему трэшерское звучание барабанов в сочетании с промоченым дорогим немецким пивом вокалом дядюшки Тома создают ощущение того, что сердце, наконец, дождалось настоящего, добротного и мощного трэша...

Uniquely among Santana compilations, "Soul Sacrifice" is included in the studio version from their first album, not the live performance from Woodstock.
The compilation contains no songs from the highly successful Supernatural album, despite it being released 3 years before this album. This is because Columbia and Santana's current label Arista Records were not under common ownership at the time. In 2013, Sony issued another "Essential Santana" 2-CD set which truncates the original's repertoire and does include music from the Arista era, as well as the live Woodstock version of "Soul Sacrifice".
