Recorded during the same session as the last two tracks of Matthew Halsall’s previous album Fletcher Moss Park (2012), When the World was One (June 2014) introduces seven new compositions featuring the Manchester-based composer, producer and DJ himself on trumpet and his “Gondwana Orchestra” – a seven piece ensemble. The instrument mix (bass, drum, saxophone, piano, harp and bansuri flute) and the reflective pace of the songs (7’’ to 12’’ long) all point eastwards, especially on songs like “Kiyomizu-Dera” and “Sagano Bamboo Forest” with the addition of a Japanese 13 string Koto harp (Keiko Kitamura). And the title of the final track (“Tribute to Alice Coltrane”) nicely positions the entire recording as an homage to the spiritual jazz movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

As smooth singers go, Philadelphia’s Melody Gardot is more versatile than most. On her last album she explored world music; on Currency of Man, she’s gone “conscious”. It’s not quite Erykah Badu, but when you’re a Grammy-winning easy-listening artist, it’s an admirable direction. There are songs inspired by the American civil rights movement (Preacherman, with its twangy, Dusty Springfield vibe), and others that speak out about war, famine and poverty. Moreover, she experiments with new rhythms – elements of 70s funk on She Don’t Know and rushes of gospel on Same to You, teamed with widescreen strings and flashes of horns. Some of her older-style material jars – when playing the cabaret siren on Bad News, or the musical theatre dame on overblown jazz ballad If Ever I Recall Your Face – but for the most part, these heavy-lidded protest jams are a sophisticated twist on her continually evolving sound.

Drones is the upcoming seventh studio album by English alternative rock band Muse. It will be released in Europe on 5 June 2015 and on 8 June in the United Kingdom under Warner Bros. Records and Helium-3. The album was recorded between 3 October 2014 and 1 April 2015 at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia and was co-produced by the band and Robert John "Mutt" Lange.
