В одном из интервью Ник сказал следующее: «Этот альбом – из вещей, которые каждый воспринимает в силу своего воспитания. Для одних это повод для разочарования, для других – просто не имеет смысла. Но все дело в гитарном звуке; вещи-то все те же, песни очень типичные для Paradise Lost. Просто звучит не как метал, а как нечто иное. Такое может кого-то сбить с толку; этот альбом – из тех, что одни любят, а другие – ненавидят. Но, в конце концов, если никто не будет ничего пробовать, не будет никакого прогресса. Так что новый альбом вышел лучше оттого, что мы сделали «Host». Наверное, это звучит излишне скромно, но реклама такому альбому не нужна.

Альбом действительно получился не такой как предыдуущие. Много нового, причём кардинально изминился стиль исполнения. А именно, Питер постарался и добавил более агрессивные гитары, барабаны. С частью всяких электронных сэмплов, Питер тоже постарался с их кардинальным изменением, это всяческие более металические звуки синтезатора, и, в то же время - классические для Питера мягкие звуки синтезаторов. Начнём по порядку, начиная с первого трека Don't Count Me Out: начало трека мягкая гитар и синтезатор на фоне, но через мгновение начинаеть мощнейший драйв тяжёлой гитарой и барабаными, и быстрыми текстами Питера, если это нельзя назвать драйвом, то с вами что-то не то.

Главные из них - „Honesty In Death“ и „Tragic Idol“ - оккупировали мозг сразу же после первого прослушивания благодаря своим фантастическим припевам. К ним приближаются „Fear of Impending Hell“ и „Worth Fighting For“, которые отличают запоминающиеся запевы и гитарные соло-номера. Другая пара, „Theories from Another World“ „To The Darkness“, смотрелась бы логично на альбоме группы, играющей классический melodic death - настолько яркий и запоминающийся риффинг в этих треках. Зато открывашка и заключительная песня завлекают уже импровизационной эквилибристикой парочки Макинтош/Аеди. Кстати говоря, если вы послушаете „Solitary One“, то в конце осознаете, что Грег практически "дословно" воспроизводит тему Шопеновского похоронного марша. Где ещё, кроме как на альбоме родоначальников стиля gothic doom, более логично слушалась бы эта тема? Вопрос риторический, само собой. До этого моим личным рекордсменом мелодичности был классический „Icon“, но „Tragic Idol“ в этом отношении превзошел даже его!

Никаких стилистических инноваций на диске нет и быть не может в принципе - группа изначально задумывалась как дань AORу восьмидесятых. Разве что приятно удивили сдвоенные бас-бочки в "Born To Believe In You", одном из сильнейших номеров диска, наряду с поэтичной, ориентированной на акустику "The Destiny Stone" и гротескной, маршеподобной "Man Behind The Mask" (нет, все-таки чувствуется здесь влияние прога, чувствуется).

Café Blue stands out with its daring blend of jazz standards, originals, and poetic settings—from Maya Angelou to avant-garde inspirations. Mourning Grace, for instance, sets Angelou’s haunting line “Will you have the grace to mourn for me?” against an evolving musical backdrop, culminating in Barber’s emotionally charged vocal ascent.

“Constantinople”, from 1998’s Modern Cool, is the most extreme example. Over a shifting Middle Eastern groove fueled by Mark Walker’s percussion work, Barber keens wordlessly and then gives trumpeter Dave Douglas several beautiful minutes to vamp in Sketches of Spain style; when she comes back in, long vocal lines punctuated by staccato guitar work by John McLean, it’s so haunting and perfect that you forget that she doesn’t actually play piano at all on the track.
