Пробежимся кратко по приблизительным определениям жанров тех 13 пьес, которые вошли на обычное издание альбома: драматичный арт-рок, этническая музыка (world music), форменная готика чистой воды, какой-то коктейль из электро-этник-рока и поп-шансона (???); три не очень внятных композиции, выполненные в духе произведений Тома Уэйтса; натуральный блюз; easy-listening; 11-й трек – это самая настоящая академическая музыка, и притом отменная; ну и завершают альбом готический арт-рок (иначе и не скажешь) и лаунж-сюита с обилием клавишных. Совершенно понятно, что кто-то обожает блюз, но терпеть не может, скажем, электронную музыку. Ну и, разумеется, наоборот. Поэтому большинство тех, кто купит сей диск, наверняка будет испытывать определенный дискомфорт и даже неприязнь хотя бы к некоторым песням на этом альбоме.

Но это не те Skinny Puppy, какими их любили ценители индастриала восьмидесятых и девяностых. Здесь, возможно, есть атмосфера, но не видно мысли. Здесь есть безумие, но не видно тревоги и ужаса. Здесь есть печаль, но не видно разочарованности в окружающей реальности. Здесь есть, хоть и уставшая, ярость, но не видно протеста против охватывающей человечество жестокости. Здесь есть энергия, но не видно стремления изменить мир. Здесь есть эстетика музыкального эксперимента, но не видно той великой подчиняющей силы Музыки.

Честно сказать, думал, что после "Ball Of The Damned" 1997 года Scanner, к сожалению, дуба дал уже окончательно. Но нет в 2002 году у группы выходит новый, пятый по счёту, альбом, названный "Scantropolis". Первое, что бросается в глаза - вокал. Если на предыдущих альбомах использовался мужской вокал, то здесь вокалом заведует некая Lisa Croft, причём поёт она не в оперной/псевдооперной манере а-ля Nightwish или Within Temptation, скорее она напоминает Доро времён "Angels Never Die", что не может не радовать. Музыка также претерпела серьёзные изменения: на смену паверу пришёл стопроцентный хэви, большей частью средне темповый. Из песен особенно хочется выделить открывающую альбом "Till the Ferryman Dies", отличные боевики "Flight of the Eagle" и "Hallowed Be My Name", а также красивую балладу "Always Alien". В общем, альбом у Scanner'a получился выше всяких похвал, всем фанатам хэви искать и слушать, слушать, слушать...

Toxicity was recorded at Cello Studios in Hollywood, California. Over 30 songs were recorded, but the band narrowed the number of songs on the album to 14. The album peaked at number one on both the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart, selling 220,000 copies in its first week of release. It was certified sextuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in July 2022, signifying at least six million copies sold in the United States. All of Toxicity's singles reached the Billboard Hot 100. The final single, "Aerials", went to number one on both the Mainstream Rock Tracks and the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Toxicity received highly positive ratings and reviews from critics, among them perfect ratings from AllMusic, Kerrang!, and Blabbermouth.net. Many critics praised the album's sound and innovation, and it ranked on multiple "best albums" lists.

Mezmerize and Hypnotize are considered two parts of a double album. Mezmerize features guitarist Daron Malakian sharing most of the vocal work with vocalist Serj Tankian, splitting the vocals at least halfway on many of the tracks.

Malakian wrote "Old School Hollywood" after playing in a celebrity baseball game for charity. The song mentions Tony Danza and Frankie Avalon, who also played in the game.

While the remaining songs have all been circulated as part of ‘bonus’ special edition Japanese releases, which I know collectors and fans alike have tracked down individually, it’s nice now to see them all bundled neatly in one package. With songs spanning through bonus editions of 2005’s ‘Stabbing the Drama’ up until last year’s ‘The Ride Majestic’, there are some true rarities here, with some tracks even being remixed and remastered for their own 2016 version to sit on this release. There are some standout classics on this CD, with tracks like “My Nerves, Your Everyday Tool”, and, “When Sound Collides” offering the frenetic melodic death metal that the fans clamor for, while “Sovereign”, “Sweet Demise” and“Resisting the Current” highlight the adaptability of the band in creating music which is catchy and accessible.This adaptability is the greatest hallmark of Soilwork, and is a true credit to their longevity and expansive appeal.
