The album prominently features lead singer Sharon den Adel's vocals as well as guitarist Robert Westerholt's gruff death metal growls. It is considered a gothic metal release with elements from doom metal, and the lyrics focus mostly on dark and supernatural themes. The track "Restless" was released as the first and only single. Although the album failed to achieve commercial success at the time of its release, it entered the Dutch Charts in 2002 after the commercial success of the band's following album.

The album received a mixed response from music critics, and only reached number 34 in the group's native UK. In total, Restless Heart charted in ten countries. With Whitesnake having been dropped by Geffen Records in 1994, Restless Heart did not receive a North American release, being available only as an import. The album's supporting tour was billed as Whitesnake's farewell tour, although the band would later reform in 2003. Restless Heart was reissued by Rhino Entertainment in 2021, featuring remastered and remixed versions of the album, among other previously unreleased material.

The first two albums were produced by Smiley and Huff, the two friends who formed the group and were listening to groups like Toto, Boz Scaggs, Journey, and Steely Dan at the time.The original lineup consisted of Billy Smiley (guitar, keyboards, and occasional lead vocals), Mark Gersmehl (keyboards and occasional lead vocals), Steve Green (lead vocals), Gary Lunn (bass), and brothers Dann and David Huff (guitars/vocals & drums respectively).

Thrice Woven wastes little time in confirming that this is indeed a black metal album. Opener “Born from the Serpent’s Eye” begins with several bright acoustic flourishes, before descending headlong into a frenzy. Shining tremolo riffs flow one after another, sharp, rolling snare beats crash forward in an aggressive rhythm, wind howls in the distance, and ringing synths underscore the immediately recognizable shrieks of Nathan Weaver.

С первых же аккордов вступительной "Crazy" возникают ассоциации с незабвенным боевиком "Wild Child".
