Aufgrund der Vermittlung ihres A&R-Repräsentanten John Kalodner hatte die neu gegründete Plattenfirma David Geffens die Band bereits unter Vertrag genommen, bevor Geffen überhaupt eine einzige Note der neuen Stücke gehört hatte. Die Arbeiten am Debütalbum begannen daher schon sehr bald, im Sommer 1981. Die Band nutzte die Londoner Townhouse Studios und die Marcus Studios. Von Anfang an war allen Beteiligten klar, dass man trotz der Vergangenheit der Musiker, die alle bei namhaften Progressive-Rock-Bands (Yes, ELP, King Crimson, UK) gespielt hatten, kein Album in diesem Stil machen wollte. Kürzere, konzisere Lieder und ein einheitlicher, geschlossener Bandsound sollten den radiotauglichen Stil der neuen Band charakterisieren.

Aqua är det progressiva rockbandet Asias fjärde studioalbum, utgivet 1992.
Albumet var Asias första med helt nytt material på sju år och gruppen hade en delvis ny uppsättning. Sångaren och basisten John Payne medverkade här för första gången, han skulle sedan komma att ha en central roll i bandet fram till återföreningen av originaluppsättningen 2006. Även gitarristen Al Pitrelli, som tidigare spelat med Alice Cooper, var ny. Steve Howe hade lämnat bandet, men återkom som gäst på flera av låtarna.

Arena is a very, very different album from its two predecessors, Aqua and Aria, and represents a definite transition from the hair-band screeches - that the indefatigable, though often execrated, John Payne was waaay too fond of - into a more mellow and melodic sound that reaches its peak with "Aura." I was able to download "Into the Arena" and "Arena" online, and they were good enough to convince me to purchase the CD.

Asia's previous album, Aria, received little promotion due to low sales figures, leading to dwindling audience turnouts during the 1994 tour. Motivated by this, Geoff Downes and John Payne opted to take the followup in a new, bold direction to salvage things. Steve Howe was contacted to return for recording sessions, but was unable to join due to his obligations with Yes at the time. John Payne, Elliot Randall, and Aziz Ibrahim each shared guitar duties on the album.

During the group's Christmas holiday break in 1995, a pipe had burst in the Electric Palace studio, destroying thousands of dollars of equipment. Upon returning in January of 1996, it was discovered that a box of tapes filled with unused material had survived among the wreckage. This led to the release of Archiva 1 and Archiva 2 later that year, the latter of which contained the song "That Season", originally meant for inclusion on Arena.
