The title derives from the Latin word for "marrow". The album is almost entirely a cappella and constructed with human vocals. Абсолютно все песни здесь достойны внимания, проходных вещей нет совершенно: и эпические композиции с оркестром, ещё раз показывающие, что тяжёлая музыка с симфонической могут сочетаться великолепно, и три мощнейших скоростных боевика, очень разных, но дико заряжающих энергией, и пара прекрасных лиричных баллад, каждая со своим настроением, и три среднетемповые песни с великолепными мелодиями и пробивающими насквозь хорами и припевами.

Брюс Дикинсон решил поэкспериментировать с гранжем. Можно провести аналогии с диском Queensryche "Hear In The Now Frontier", с той разницей, что Дикинсон до такого безобразия не опустился. "Skunkworks" выглядит вполне удобоваримым, разве что скучноватым. Хотя имеются очень приличные песни в типично дикинсоновском ключе (Faith, Solar Сonfinement, Meltdown). В общем, альбом получился не лучшим в дискографии Брюса, но данный эксперимент вполне имеет право на существование.

Blood Red Throne выделяются более прозрачным и чуть более высоким гитарным саундом, а также ярко выраженной чеканкой риффов. Такое впечатление, что гитаристы и ритм-секция не дэт играют, я шагают парадным маршем по Красной площади. Чеканный шаг время от времени сменяется непродолжительным рубиловом под бласт-бит, а иногда затихает для того, что мрачный голос (иногда через примочку) под мрачную мелодию поведал нам очередной ужас. Довольно неплохой гроулинг у вокалиста, некоего мистера Хастлера:

This is a compilation of some 1970s LPs. If you like Weather Report, Chick Corea, Santana or Miles Davis of this period, you'll enjoy this one. At 8 tracks and just over 40 minutes, one wishes they'd be a little more generous. What's here is a pretty good mix of Cobham compositions though; includes two Cobham's fusion classics: Spectrum and Crosswinds.
