Parts of the album were written by lead singer Keith Murray whilst staying between a rented cottage in Athens, Georgia, and Miami Beach, Florida. Barbara was then recorded in New York, Los Angeles and London. The album marks the first recorded with new drummer Andy Burrows, formerly of Razorlight. After Burrows parted with Razorlight in March 2009, he joined We Are Scientists in August of the same year, scheduling recording sessions with them during autumn 2009.

Cooleyhighharmony's title is a tribute to a real high school in Chicago: Cooley Vocational High School.

"Who Let the Dogs Out" (originally titled "Doggie") is a song written by the Trinidadian musician Anslem Douglas and then recorded by the Bahamian junkaroo band Baha Men. Originally released by Douglas as "Doggie" in 1998, it was covered by producer Jonathan King who sang it under the name Fat Jakk and his Pack of Pets. King brought the song to the attention of his friend Steve Greenberg, who then had the Baha Men cover the song.

Take the Heat Off Me is the debut album by Euro-Caribbean group Boney M. The album became a major seller in Europe, specifically in the Nordic countries (number 1 in Sweden and Finland, number 2 in Norway), but in the USA the album just missed the album chart. Unorthodox Jukebox is the second studio album by American singer and songwriter Bruno Mars. It was released on December 7, 2012, by Atlantic Records and was made available to listen to in its entirety for a week before its release. He has released 14 studio albums (three of which were released on indie labels), as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.

Bassomatic (sometimes written as Bass-O-Matic) were a British band that recorded house music in the 1990s. A project of William Orbit, the band included vocalist Sharon Musgrave and rapper MC Inna Onestep amongst others. For the second album, singer Sindy Finn replaced Sharon Musgrave on vocals. Both albums were produced at Guerilla Studios, founded by William Orbit with Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert, and released by Virgin Records.
