Death stalked Mayhem from the womb. Founded near Oslo in 1984, the black metal band cycled through a handful of temporary vocalists before meeting the Swedish teenager Per Yngve Ohlin in 1988. Ohlin went by the pseudonym Dead, and his self-destructive intensity onstage was the missing piece for this band bent on sonic and metaphysical annihilation. Dead died by suicide in 1991 without ever appearing on a proper Mayhem release. His voice only surfaced posthumously on a couple of live recordings, including one adorned with a gruesome photo of his corpse next to the shotgun he used to kill himself. Two years later, Mayhem’s charismatic guitarist Euronymous (born Øystein Aarseth) was murdered by Varg Vikernes, the musician behind competing black metal project Burzum. In 1994, Mayhem would finally release their debut full-length, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, featuring Euronymous on guitar and Vikernes on session bass in what might be the only musical collaboration between a murderer and his victim.

Thriller is een album uit 1982 van Michael Jackson. Het was het zesde studioalbum en Jacksons tweede soloalbum bij Epic Records. Het werd uitgebracht op 30 november 1982. Het werd het populairste album van Jackson en zorgde voor internationale roem. In 2007 plaatste de National Association of Recording Merchandisers en de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame het album op de derde plaats van hun "Definitive 200" lijst, een compilatie waarvan wordt gedacht dat ze de beste albums aller tijden bevat. Uit het album kwamen zeven singles voort. Dit was tevens ongebruikelijk voor die tijd, waarbij meestal maar twee tot drie singles werden uitgegeven per album. Op drie van de zeven singles (The Girl Is Mine, Billie Jean en Thriller) verscheen als B-kant Can't Get Outta The Rain, een Off the Wall-outtake. Het album is in meerdere opzichten een mijlpaal in de popgeschiedenis. Het was in Nederland het bestverkochte album van 1983.

Этот альбом 22-хлетней давности можно назвать лучшей работой Моторов за всю их историю. Тут есть все - и сумасшедший драйв, и стеб, который группа впоследствии утратила. Короче, стопроцентный Моторхэд! Заглавная вещь Overkill и хиты Stay Clean (чумовое басовое соло Лемми), No Class, Damage Case - все это есть бессмертная классика. Ребята из Металлики выпустили на своем двойнике Garage inc две кавер версии с моторовского Overkill - и обосрались. Ульриху и компании просто не хватило мастерства и души для того, чтобы сыграть эти вещи. Неудивительно, потому что Overkill of Motorhead - это та высота, которая вряд ли будет когда-нибудь покорена. Даже самими Моторами.

Одной из причин высокого качества новой работы мне видятся кадровые перестановки в коллективе. Перед выпуском “Endgame ” Мастейн избавился от гитариста-середняка Дровера – в группу пришел опытный Крис Бродерик, его искрометные партии весьма позитивно сказались на гитарных делах того альбома. Ну а “Th1rt3en” записывался уже с Дэйвом Эллефсоном на басу, который был в группе с Мастейном с самого основания Megadeth в 1983 вплоть до роспуска в 2002 году. Этот талантливый музыкант, как мне кажется, не мог не повлиять на атмосферу нового материала.

Для начала, пресловутых скандинавских скрипок и дудок здесь оставлено буквально на полдюжины отдельных партий, пару минут от общего звучания, зато каждая такая мелодия действительно оригинальна и красива. Затем, здесь не так уж много и атмо-блэка, он скорее ощутим некоей тучей на горизонте, ясным чувством опасности - но конкретно гитарные тремоло и бластбиты звучат строго дозированно. Ну и вообще металлическая компонента преобразилась и добавила здорового разнообразия в динамике; порою и откровенный дум проклевывается.
